StaRGazing 2011 Events
Annual Business Meeting, Monday, 9:00-9:30am
All Mensa members (no guests, please) are welcome to find out what has happened in GLAAM during the preceding year and what the Board's vision is for the future. Click here to see the meeting agenda. (It's a PDF file, so you'll need the free Adobe Acrobat PDF reader if you don't already have it.)
BYOB (Bring Your Own Bottle) Wine Tasting, Friday, 9:30pm
Back by popular demand! This program invites attendees to bring a bottle of wine to share with others in the StaRGazers Lounge on Friday night! Enjoy fellowship with other Mensans and you enjoy the delightful tastes of your fellow wine connoisseurs!
Coffeehouse hosted by Alan Stillson
Includes a Filk music performance by Alan Stillson, a limerick contest, and member performances of music and poetry (bring your own and sign up at the door). Be beautiful, baby!
Epiphanies, Epistemology and Ample Eats meeting
A free-ranging discussion group of regulars and newcomers tackles a new topic each month. At StaRGazing 2011, we'll be discussing World Economic Crisis. Join us!
Games in our dedicated Game Room
Boggle: Boggle is a game somewhat similar to Scrabble except that the tiles are shaken out at random and everyone works off the same set of tiles. Words can be made in virtually any direction and a round takes a couple of minutes rather than a couple of hours. We will play several rounds in a round-robin format and ultimately crown a champion.
Carnelli: The classic Mensa word-association game consisting of movies, music, books, and whatever else the capricious and arbitrary host will allow.
Colander/Time's Up: The first round you can say or do virtually anything to give a clue. Second round is one word plus gestures and humming. Final round is strictly humming and pantomime.
Dr. IQ: The audience answers and asks trivia questions.
Joke-Off: Hear a few jokes, tell a few jokes. Tasty rewards.
Generation X/Y Meet & Greet, Friday, 7:30pm
Want to meet others your age? GenX and Gen Y will get together to start the RG off right. We are open to anyone interested in activities and discussions focused on people in Generation X (1961-1981) or Y (1976-1990), which is anyone in their 20s, 30s, and 40s. Join coordinators Danielle Hanne and Hilary Foster at the Meet & Greet and get to know other (relatively) young Ms before we head out on the Pub Crawl!
Write the funniest limerick based on a photo. Audience judging at the coffeehouse Friday night. Photos will be published in the January L.A. Mentary and available on site at registration.
Bring your unwanted books, magazines, DVDs, CDs, tapes or any media to the table for attendees to take home. Remaining items will be donated to a library or charity.
Mensa Testing, Sunday, 8:00-11:00am
Invite your family and friends to take the official Mensa exam and see if they qualify for membership in Mensa. Please sign up in advance! Contact Proctor Dave Felt at DaveF@dfe.net and see his website at http://www.dfe.net/mensa.html.
Murder Mystery Game
Watch a video in the company of your fellow suspects. Question each other and try to explain the events in the video. Discover who among you is hiding a sanguinary secret!
Name That Tune with Alan Stillson
This long-standing RG tradition will be played once more. How quickly can you associate a few notes with the title of a song you haven't heard in xxx years? The host is Alan Stillson, leader of the GLAAM Folksong SIG.
New Member Reception, Saturday, 2:30pm
Welcome New Mensans! This is your chance to meet your fellow Mensans at GLAAM's largest party of the year – the RG! We'll have a brief period of orientation followed by the opportunity to enjoy the rest of the RG offerings. Please RSVP with either Danielle or Desiree so we know how many to count.
Original Interactive Word Games with Alan Stillson
Alan Stillson is author or co-author of nine puzzle books, including seven official American Mensa titles. Here's a chance to enjoy some original interactive word games and bring out your inner word geek. These word games are fast moving and easy to play — no tiles, no boards. You can find Mr. Stillson's puzzle books and many sample puzzles by visiting Stillsonworks.com.
Pub Crawl, Friday, 8:00pm with Danielle Hanne and Hilary Foster
We will head over to Ventura Blvd. to check out some of the interesting spots nearby. Van transportation between the general Pub Crawl area and the Marriott will be available and crawlers will have a planned order of stops … but once the Crawl departs there is no set time at each stop!
Sing-Along with Alan Stillson
An hour of fun group singing from some of the best pages of our Folksong SIG songbook.
